TODDLER 18 months - 2 1/2 Years

 Educator/Child Ratio 1:5

A Registered Early Childhood Educator oversees the classroom, curriculum and activity programming. These ratios and staff qualifications ensures that your child gets individual attention and you get to know the classroom teachers. Being in small groupings with a familiar teacher allows your child to build trusting relationships and comfortably explore and learn.

Your Toddler's Day

Our curriculum focuses on connections and relationships. The teachers get to know the children and families to incorporate what is familiar at home and blend it into their learning experience in the centre. A typical day includes indoor and outdoor play, literacy, numeric, music and art activities, as well as science and nature discovery through experimentation. These activities are in addition to healthy and yummy meals and snacks and some sleep or rest time. During your child’s time in the toddler program, their teacher will work closely with you to help your child transition through the stage of toilet training, with the aim of children being toilet trained or in the process of being toilet trained prior to joining the preschool program.

The Classroom

Our classroom was carefully designed to allow every child to explore and learn at their own pace. Toddlers are very curious and starting to discover a whole new world. We will support their discoveries and spark their senses through sensory activities, music and fun messy art will be a big part of their daily activities. The classroom provides a stimulating environment which contains a wide variety of materials and activities designed to enhance your child’s skills including building blocks, role playing, painting, problem solving, discovering, communicating, creating, imagining, reading, writing, numbers, space and measurements, find motor and gross motor skills. Each classroom is furnished with an Air purification system, air conditioning, cubbies, sleeping cots, and stimulating environment of activities, materials and toys to enhance your child’s skills.

Outdoor Playground

Children will be given 2 hours of outdoor play per day, weather permitting. Generally, children will spend 1 hour outdoors in the morning and 1 hour outdoors in the afternoon. The specific outdoor play times may rotate depending on the day to allow children to stay in small cohorts.  During inclement weather, alternate active play will be provided indoors. We ask that you always dress your child for the weather so that your child can participate comfortably outdoors.

Naps and Rest Times

Children will be provided a rest period not exceeding 2 hours. This typically happens after children eat lunch, clean up and go through their washroom routine. Children who do not sleep will engage in quiet activities (i.e. reading, puzzles, drawing).  Children’s needs may change from week to week and we encourage parents/guardians to communicate changes in-home sleep patterns.

Socialization

Our Toddler classroom allows young children to make connections, form relationships, friendships, and learn to understand other children. Toddlers are learning how to manage their emotions and impulses in ways that will help them successfully navigate the world around them.

Areas of Development

Some key learning outcomes in our toddler program are:

  • Language Development
  • Self-help skills and the development of motor and hand/eye coordination
  • Socialization and the development of positive social skills
  • Sense of autonomy and self-esteem

The program is designed to respect each toddler’s abilities, needs and strengths. This all contributes to toddlers becoming more confident learners.
